The Henderson Fire Department spent hours trying to douse a fire at a vacent home Friday morning in the far south valley. Firefighters responded about 1:40 a.m. after a passerby reported the fire at the corner of Welpman Way and Battista Lane, near Volunteer Boulevard and Executive Airport Drive, according to HFD spokeswoman Kathleen Richards. A massive plume of smoke spilled out from the boarded-up house as crews battled the blaze, engulfing firefighters every time the wind shifted.
