A rescue team from Nevada brought 60 people to safety along with family pets during a 20-hour shift in eastern North Carolina.
Nevada Task Force One, a 16-person water rescue team, was deployed in North Carolina in support of rescue efforts after the landfall of Hurricane Florence. The storm has resulted in at least 14 deaths and an estimate of $30 billion in damages in North and South Carolina.
The team worked a 20-hour shift during its first operational period which ended at 3 a.m. Saturday.
They rescued 60 people, including two children and several family pets including dogs and cats.
Because of high tide and rising flood waters the team was cut off from its base of operations. The fire chief of Newport, N.C., about 20 miles from where the team initially began the operational period, opened city hall so the team members could catch a nap on the floor.
