A pair of wildfires kept local agencies busy Thursday afternoon.
The largest--named the Chimney Fire--broke out shortly before noon, sending up a dark cloud of smoke in the skies north of town.
It was burning on BLM land and would eventually draw crews and equipment from several agencies, but Truckee Meadows Fire was first to respond.
A structure protection engine was staged close to homes in Sun Valley, but the wind was blowing in the other direction and they were never threatened.
The hills out here are criss-crossed with roads and are popular with off-road enthusiasts and target shooters.
The cause is under investigation, but the clear skies effectively ruled out any natural origins.
