Northern Nevada's first snow storm of 2019 caused the Reno Fire Department to respond to nearly 100 calls. "We had 93 calls overnight and we average about 114 calls a day," Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran says. Cochran says the wet, heavy snow was the cause behind many of the calls, such as car accidents, power lines and transformers blowing out. "We had a lot of weight on trees on power lines, transformers, and it was causing the lines to come down and the transformers to blow," he says. Cochran says it is essential for homeowners to identify trees that may be a hazard. "If you see a tree that's infringing on a power line make sure the power company knows," he says.
