A Camillus man awoke this morning to the smell of smoke and a ringing smoke alarm.
He went to find out what caused the smoke and found a hole in his kitchen floor caused by a fire burning in the basement below.
The homeowner, Tim Wawro, escaped his 917 Onondaga Road residence uninjured and called 911, Onondaga County sheriff's Detective Jon Seeber said.
Firefighters from Taunton, Fairmount and Solvay arrived around 6:27 a.m. and made quick work of the fire. Water pipes in the basement burst during the fire, which helped contain the blaze, Seeber said.
The basement and kitchen floor sustained heavy damage. The accidental fire was caused by a faulty electrical cord, Seeber said.
