Wellesley Island's fire station was destroyed in a fire on August 14, 2014. Two years later, the island is closer to getting a permanent home for its fire department. "We need a new station to be able to hold the engine's tankers and pumpers and the ambulance," Wellesley Island resident Frank Beadel said. Voters in the town of Orleans fire district voted 151 to 14 to approve a $1.3 million bond to build a new fire house. The fire department has raised the rest of the funds to build the $1.6 million facility on Cross Island Road. Right now the fire department's equipment is scattered throughout various locations. A new building would put fire trucks and the island's ambulance all under one roof. The fire department says equipment in different locations makes it difficult to respond efficiently. "When you're going to a call, what are you going to take?" fire department President Bob Oliver said. "If you need the ambulance and the pumper, which one do you go to?" "Having them close by and in a new, modern facility is really an important piece of insurance that I hope I never have to use," resident David Belding said.
