Mourners gathered Monday for the funeral of Yonkers Fire Lt. John Rodriguez, who died Tuesday of a 9/11-related cancer.
A large contingent of firefighters attended the funeral at St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers for the 53-year-old married father of two.
A native of Cuba, Rodriguez joined the Yonkers Fire Department in 2000 and served with Engines 308, 311 and 303 and Ladder 71. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2012 and assigned to Engine 310 then returned to Ladder 71. During his more than 15 years with the department, he received a Class B award for Hurricane Sandy, three unit citations, a Commissioner Award and a letter of commendation.
