The towns of Bennington, Orangeville and Sheldon are looking to dissolve the Varysburg Fire Protection District and merge it with the Varysburg Fire District.
If approved, the entire area will be called the “Varysburg Fire District.”
The “crux” of the idea, according to Len Knaggs, an officer in the Varysburg Fire Department, is to create a larger area so more people can run for various positions within the department. Knaggs said the Protection District includes about 900 parcels between the three towns while the Fire District is only about 100 parcels. Of those 900 parcels in the Protection District, the Hamlet of Varysburg is not included — meaning the fire department has a small area in which to find potential officers.
