Less than three hours after the Oct. 19, 2015, fire that killed two boys and left two women severely burned, Johnson City detectives were knocking on the door to Dwight Burton's apartment a quarter-mile from the crime scene.
They considered him a suspect.
As police were building their case, the swarm of emergency responders continued sorting through the remnants of the 2 a.m. blaze that ripped through 145 Floral Ave., killing brothers Joshua Maxwell, 4, and Michael Maxwell, 3.
The investigation moved quickly throughout the day: By 5:30 a.m., Johnson City police were speaking to Burton at 91 Endicott Ave., his apartment in Johnson City.
