The Fort Myers City Council is set to confirm the city's new fire chief next week.
John Caufield, a former fire chief in Rochester, New York, will replace Trenton Bowen, who retired earlier this year. Bowen was scrutinized and placed on leave after an investigation revealed problems that included favoritism within the department.
The investigation concluded Bowen did nothing illegal, but that there were communication problems within the department.
Caufield most recently was appointed the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director for the National Fire Protection Association.
The council will meet Monday for the confirmation hearing.
