Matthew Fiorito is still trying to fill his mom’s shoes — even though they haven’t fit him for years.
When Fiorito graduates to probationary firefighter Wednesday in Brooklyn, he will be following in the footsteps of his mother, Marianne Monahan, who was in the first FDNY class to include women in 1982. “When he was a little boy, all he ever wanted was to be a firefighter,” proud mama Monahan, who retired from the department as a captain in 2003, said of her son. “I have pictures of him when he was 5, wearing my boots and my helmet.” The days may be long gone when the now- 6-foot-tall 27-year-old Fiorito could squeeze into his 5-foot-3, 120-pound mom’s gear, but he still looks up to her.
