New York Fire City Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over the graduation ceremony of 311 probationary firefighters in Brooklyn Wednesday morning, after their completion of a rigorous Fire Academy training program.
Nigro reminded the men and women before him that their first act of bravery took place the moment they decided to sign up for the FDNY.
"Every firefighter . . . has been where you are now,'' he said. "Their careers began just as yours did, with a simple raise of their right hand, and a solemn promise to do all they can to save the lives of others. That moment was your first act of bravery -- committing yourself to a job that many dream of, but few can actually do."
Chief of Department James E. Leonard also spoke to the graduating class about the journey ahead of them.
"Your careers are only just beginning and I can tell you it is an incredible journey," Leonard said. "You are a symbol that the FDNY is always moving forward and working to improve how we protect our city."
