The city is another step closer to finalizing a new contract with its firefighters’ union.
During a meeting Monday, the Common Council’s Finance and Audit Committee unanimously adopted a resolution authorizing a new three-year deal with Kingston Professional Firefighters Association, Local 461. The deal, retroactive to the beginning of 2017, would give firefighters salary increases of 2 percent per year for 2017, 2018 and 2019. The city’s total cost for the raises is $692,350.
The contract still must be approved by the full Common Council, which meets again March 6.
Alderman Douglas Koop, D-Ward 2, said there was little discussion among committee members before Monday’s vote. He said the committee, which he chairs, knew the contract was coming and that members had discussed it with the mayor and city Comptroller John Tuey.
