Two chickens and a duck escaped a two-alarm blaze that engulfed their coop, the St. Remy fire chief said Thursday.
Mike Litts said the fire broke out about 11 p.m. Wednesday in a carport at 153 New Salem Road that had the coop both inside and outside of it.
The fire spread to and damaged a neighboring garage, Litts said.
No one was injured, and there were no additional fowl in the coop. The cause of the fire, which destroyed the carport, was under investigation Thursday, Litts said.
About 20 firefighters from the St. Remy, RIfton, Ulster Hose and Bloomington fire departments fought the blaze.
It was declared under control about 30 minutes after it started, Litts said.
