Roughly 150 firefighters responded to the scene of a Sunday evening fire that leveled an apartment building and displaced 19 residents in Chateaugay’s village center.
The nearly 10-hour firefighting effort began at 4:06 when crews from Chateaugay and Burke responded to reports of a structure fire at 183 E. Main St., which sat immediately west of Chateaugay’s municipal building and theater, across a driveway from the historic building.
Crews remained on scene into the small hours of Monday morning, with Chateaugay returning to their station at 2:35 a.m.
Though the residents of the building’s six apartments were able to evacuate safely, three first responders sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the firefighting effort.
