An off-duty police officer pulled two people from their burning car on Route 17 Wednesday before the flames spread and destroyed the vehicle, the Goshen fire chief said. Chief Richard Pearson said the car, which caught fire on eastbound Route 17 near Exit 122A, the Fletcher Street exit, was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at about 12:30 p.m. Pearson said the fire started in the engine compartment. Pearson said the man and the woman who were pulled from the car were checked out at the scene by Goshen Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel and they did not require hospitalization. He could not provide their identities or hometowns. Village of Goshen police Chief James Watt said the off-duty police officer who pulled the two people from the burning car was Brian Kelly, one of his village officers. Kelly is also a volunteer firefighter with the Goshen Volunteer Fire Department, Watt said.
