Buffalo firefighters had their hands full with a large grass fire in the Valley section of the city. Spokesperson Mike DeGeorge said the call went out around 3:20 for the foot of Smith St. The wind-driven flames spread near an old railroad track near the foot of Leddy St. There was brief talk of calling the city's Edward M. Cotter fire boat into service; but it turned out not to be necessary. The fire was called under control shortly after 4 PM. No injuries were reported.
