A man escaped his house after it caught fire twice in six hours. It happened at a two-family home on South Lake Avenue in Bergen. The first fire started around 5:30 p.m Monday in one of the apartments. Firefighters say a microwave was placed on a stove in the kitchen and the stove was somehow turned on. That fire was quickly put out. Six hours later, flames and heavy smoke were seen shooting from the roof of the home. The homeowner, who escaped with his dog, says people were in the process of moving into the apartment that caught fire. Investigators say the home is a total loss and the cause is still under investigation.
