As the fire destroyed their 900 Mann Ave. home early Sunday, Monzalah Alshami and her high school-age son, Motasam, leapt to safety from a second-floor window, city police said Monday. Around 4:45 a.m. when the mother and son ran around to the front of the building, 41-year-old Monzalah Alshami rushed through the door into the intense blaze in an attempt to rescue her 8-year-old son, Aymen, and her mother, Safia Alblakhi, 68, Detective Scott Earing said. Motasam Alshami tried to go in after his mother but was driven back by the flames, Earing said. The Rensselaer High School junior turned to neighbors to call 911 to summon the Rensselaer Fire Department.
