The City of Poughkeepsie formally dedicated two new fire apparatus and a police vehicle to the memory of the late Assemblyman Frank Skartados on Tuesday. Skartados passed away of cancer last April. Mayor Robert Rolison said Skartados had worked on funding for the new equipment for two years up until his untimely death. The assemblyman had secured two separate grants totaling $1 million to help purchase a new fire engine and tower ladder truck for the city. With the funding, the city opted to purchase both rigs at the same time in an effort to save money. The decision paid off with a savings of $200,000. The engine and ladder trucks cost a total of $1.4 million dollars. The new equipment arrived a few weeks ago and is replacing two rigs that are approximately 20 years old. The rigs have already been put to the test, according to Fire Chief Mark Johnson.
