The Oneonta Town Fire Commission held a controversial budget hearing Tuesday with the future of the commission itself in doubt. There has been a stalemate in negotiations between the town, city and commission for more than a year that culminated in the commission voting to dissolve in a 3-2 vote in September. Chairwoman Johna Peachin and commissioners Ron Peters and Fernando “Fred” Volpe voted in favor of dissolution. Commissioners Michelle Catan and Alan Rubin voted against the dissolution. The vote prompted the town to bring a lawsuit against the commission in order to keep it operating until Dec. 31, 2019. Town of Oneonta Supervisor Robert Wood said the town is hoping the court will rule in favor of the Town of Oneonta so that it can develop its own fire district. The court date is set for Thursday. Uncertainty loomed over Tuesday's meeting because of the upcoming court date.
