After postponing construction for four years, the plan to expand the South Queensbury fire station on Dix Avenue has tripled in cost. Town Board members weren’t happy but weren’t immediately opposed to the proposal at a workshop meeting Monday night to discuss it. The proposal, described in 2015 as a $1.5 million expansion, is now estimated at $4.1 million to $4.3 million. The first estimate was before the fire company hired an architect and went through the entire building with him, describing all the changes they would like. To pay for the current proposal, the Town Board would have to increase its yearly payments to the fire company by 19 percent, to $439,000. The board already increased its payments by $80,000, which was supposed to cover the debt payments for the project. Supervisor John Strough said the board would probably be willing to support a project of up to $3.5 million, but firefighters said they just can’t build the expansion for less than $4.1 million.
