Fire Lt. Tom Emling has always enjoyed restoring older vehicles. He owns a 1977 VW "Bug," a 1969 Chevy Impala SS and a '52 Chevy pickup. But his latest project is especially challenging - and close to his heart. Emling, who is the city's fire marshal, now owns Old Engine One -- a 1949 American LaFrance pumper Model 700 once used by the Berea Fire Department. In fact, the pumper was in service when Emling's father, Edward, was a volunteer firefighter with the department from 1953-1982. Edward Emling worked full time in the body shop at Merrick Chevrolet.
