Firefighters with the Fredericktown Community Fire District were called Friday evening after a barn caught on fire in the 20000 block of Whitney Road in Middlebury Township.
Large plumes of black smoke could be seen from miles away before firefighters arrived on the scene. The blaze was reported at around 5 p.m., according to Fire Chief Scott Mast.
The fire occurred in an area that was not near any fire hydrants. Tankers were requested from Big Walnut Joint Fire District and water was drafted off a bridge just east of Batemantown.
Assistance was requested from several near by fire departments, including Johnsville, Mount Gilead, Jefferson Township and College Township.
The barn was reported to be completely engulfed in flames and took almost two hours to contain.
