He served the community for nearly 30 years, now a Toledo firefighter is in need of some help of his own.
Lt. Darryl Murphy was diagnosed with leukemia in March, 2017, and is now in need of a second bone marrow transplant.
"Darryl's spirit is amazing considering what he is going through," Battalion Chief Brian Byrd said. "Darryl want's to get better and get back to work."
Battalion Chief Brian Byrd is helping to plan a bone marrow drive that's being called, "Do it for Darryl."
"Darryl likes giving back to people," Byrd said. "He has been everything from a basketball coach, a mentor for kids in the community. he always does it out of the limelight, that's just how Darryl is."
On Saturday, representatives from Be The Match, a national bone marrow transplant program, will take a cheek swab during the drive that will be used for their nation wide registry.
Byrd said the entire process takes about 20 minutes.
