Fire departments across the Valley were busy all day Sunday fighting multiple brush fires — at one point, at least eight were burning simultaneously.
A combination of weather conditions, time of year and location made most of the fires tough to extinguish.
“This is very uncommon for Boardman, obviously, because we don’t have a lot of open areas to catch fire,” said Lt. Jim McCreary, Boardman Fire Department.
One brush fire burned for at least three hours in a wooded area off Southern Boulevard before firefighters could get it under control.
“You can’t get water back here initially because it’s so far off the road,” McCreary said.
The fire came just a few hundred yards from the Field of Dreams baseball fields, a gas tank and some power lines.
