It remains unknown what will happen when first responders in Butler County perform a software upgrade on their radio system in 2019. Every first responder uses the same Motorola two-way radio to communicate within the county but not every jurisdiction is able to cover the cost of new radios. Some departments are taking a "wait and see" approach before investing thousands of dollars not in the budget. "Two years ago, were under the impression that the radios that we had were physically going to be able to last us another five to 10 years with no problem, based upon the actual physicality of the radio," West Chester Fire Chief Rick Prinz said. "The hardware was fine and we believed it would last us for a long time. Then we learned later that there were some software updates that would occur that could render the radio inoperable." Prinz said Motorola is scheduled to perform software upgrades in 2019 and 2021.
