The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the city of Amherst a $313,396 grant that will aid in the purchasing of radios and radio equipment for the Amherst Fire Department.
The city will contribute $15,669 for the equipment.
"Of course, we know that technology is always changing, and this is a way the Fire Department will be able to upgrade the radio equipment for a really small portion of the amount that it's gonna take," said Amherst mayor Mark Costilow, who spoke Oct. 15 for Auditor Derek Pittak, who was absent during a City Council meeting.
"The fire chief has told me that these funds are ready to go, and we can buy these radios as soon as the money is available," Costilow said.
