Woman and child die after Dayton house fire

Fire officials say a woman and a small child died after a house fire in Dayton early Thursday morning. Crews responded to reports of a fire at a house on the corner of S. Paul Laurence Dunbar Street and Tampa Avenue around 3 a.m. Thursday. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the home. Neighbors told firefighters people were living in the home and crews went into rescue mode to find anyone inside. Firefighters found a woman and child. The woman was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, while the child was taken to Dayton Children's Hospital. Fire officials say both people died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire. Family members confirm the the woman was the child's mother. According to fire officials, the child is believed to be less than one year old. Fire officials say a third person was living at the house, but was not home at the time of the fire. Authorities are working to contact that person.
