Cincinnati city officials are discussing ways to keep first responders safe following the Fifth Third shooting.
For firefighters, that could mean adding ballistic helmets to their gear. The shooting was a chaotic day in one of Cincinnati's most recognizable spaces.
Three people died after a gunman opened fire at the Fifth Third building downtown
First responders were quick to the scene.
"They have given us an all clear, but if we were to wait until it's completely safe, we wouldn't get to victims for quite a long time," said Asst. Fire Chief Tom Lakamp.
Cincinnati firefighters have been equipped with ballistic vests for about a year.
They wore them that fateful day at Fountan Square.
A ballistic helmet would be an extension of that protection.
"Had we had them on the apparatus that day, we would have had them on," Lakamp said.
