A Colerain Township police officer died Monday, three days after he was critically hurt in the line of duty, and just after hundreds attended a vigil to pray for his recovery.
“The death of Colerain Township Police Officer Dale Woods is not only a tragedy for the community he served, it is also a heartbreaking loss that all Ohioans share. We will be lowering the flags in his honor,” Gov. John Kasich said in a tweet Tuesday morning.
A truck hit Officer Woods while he was redirecting traffic on Colerain Avenue after a crash Friday night, police have said.
The 46-year-old father of three children described by his chief as a “cop’s cop” was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He was listed in severely critical condition before his death was announced at a news conference late Monday. Officer Woods served several communities throughout the Tri-State in the past several years as a firefighter, dispatcher and police officer.
