An issue with a hot water tank at Ridgeview Junior High School led to firefighters responding to the school and several people taken to be checked out at a hospital.
School officials say an odor in a back room was detected, and it was determined it was coming from the hot water tank in the boiler room of the school.
"They had a motor that went out on the exhaust system of their hot water heater which ended up allowing unburned fuel if you will, inside of the building," said Violet Township Battalion Chief Kenn Taylor. "So, it put off some carbon monoxide." The fire department was called to come check the situation when maintenance discovered it wasn't working properly, and the affected area was evacuated.
"We found that two of the custodians had a slightly elevated CO level and they were both experiencing some headaches," said Taylor.
