Firefighters controlled a stubborn, two-alarm fire Tuesday night, but not before it inflicted extensive damage on a market and deli on Southwest Canyon Road. The blaze took about 45 minutes to control. There were no injuries reported. Multiple calls flooded in just before 6:30 p.m., reporting a fire at the Bazaar Market, located at 10255 S.W. Canyon Road. Crews arriving at the scene reporting some fire flicking from the side of the building, with considerable amounts of smoke billowing out the front. "There were employees there when it started and they saw that it was burning in the kitchen," said Cassandra Ulven, a spokeswoman for Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. "But there was just too much smoke and flame to extinguish it at that point. They were all safely evacuated by the time crews got there." A second alarm, later recalled, was sounded to help battle flames burning in the building's attic, he said. The 7,000-square-foot structure has housed numerous businesses over the years, she said, including a grocery store, a restaurant and various markets. Currently, it serves as a deli and Asian market selling a wide variety of products. The building lacks sprinklers and remodeling efforts over the years left twists and turns that made fighting the fire difficulty, Ulven said. "Our fire investigator is on scene and will start trying to determine how this started once things cool down," she said.
