Kids took the driver’s seat in a Bend Fire engine Saturday at the department’s annual open house. The vehicle, of course, was parked, but that didn’t lessen the excitement for the children climbing aboard.
“It’s fun to kick back and have the kids come out, have them touch and see things they’ve just read about,” George Fox, a volunteer firefighter, said.
The open house is a day for kids to interact with firefighters (and get free Eberhard’s ice cream) from the department at the north station, just off Highway 20.
On the side of a fire engine, Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Derlacki showed two young brothers the dials and gauges where firefighters operate the hoses.
