The Oregon Department of Forestry says there are four helicopters and three air tankers controlling the flames in the Cleveland Ridge Fire. As soon as smoke was spotted just after 4 p.m. on August 22, the air crews were immediately called out. Brian Ballou is the fire prevention specialist ODF and says air crews are always the first to get called out. "Usually when we get a fire like this it pretty much consumes all the resources that we have, at least on half of the district. In this case, everybody on the Medford side," Ballou said. He explains why they can even beat crews to the scene. "The helicopters give us a visual advantage. They give us water that can be used at a real pin point on something that's flaring up and something that we might not easily be able to get an engine or a hose to," Ballou said. Darlen Robertson, a resident in Trail, says she feels better about having air crews work to put out the fire. "My late husband was a pilot, I know efforts of pilots and the tankers and helicopters. They're doing an amazing job. And as long as I'm seeing them...you know they're not going to let it get out of too much control," Robertson said.
