Fire crews are working to extinguish a wildfire that started in Cottage Grove Wednesday afternoon. The fire broke out on Mt. David near North J Street in Cottage Grove. Fire crews responded to a fire that grew to 2 acres around 4:30 p.m. According to Fire Chief John Wooten from South Lane County Fire and Rescue, the fire is now 85 percent contained, but not yet under control. The fire started on the ground and worked its way up the trees. It’s not clear yet what started the blaze. “To my knowledge we have no structures threatened right now, other than the one behind me on J Street and we believe that we've secured that one,” Wooten said. Wooten said Oregon Department of Forestry assisted with a helicopter and a bulldozer and 60 to 65 personnel were on scene. No injuries or fatalities were reported. This is an ongoing investigation.
