Just days after Portland swore in a new police chief, on Thursday it got a new fire chief as well.
Mike Myers was hired after a nationwide search to replace the recently retired Chief Erin Janssens.
He had a 26-year career with the Las Vegas Fire Department and most recently served as fire chief for the city of St. Charles, Missouri.
At news conference Myers started with this message to his crews.
"There is nothing more important to me than making sure that you have the resources you need to do your job and that we send you home safely every day back to your families. I want you to understand that is very important, and I take that role very seriously," he said.
He also said he a personal mission that goes beyond his duties of chief, which is to protect the health and well-being of Portland citizens. He plans to accomplish that by going out to neighborhoods and teaming up with advocacy groups and nonprofits.
