A woman is being treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the Southeast Portland home she was inside early Monday evening, fire officials said. The home, which is located in the 5900 block of Southeast Center Street, was heavily damaged in the blaze, said Lt. Rich Chatman, a Portland fire spokesman. Firefighters were called there around 6:40 p.m. and had the fire out by 7 p.m. Chatman said crews showed up and saw fire coming out a window above the home's front door. The fire may have been cause by improperly discarded smoking materials, he said. The home's second floor sustained the brunt of the heavy damage, Chatman said, and the first floor sustained smoke damage. There's not yet a financial estimate of the damages, he said. Chatman said he thinks two people were home when the fire broke out. A man who was on the patio went upstairs to help the woman get down the stairs and out of the house. No additional injuries were reported, Chatman said.
