Two Albany police vehicles, an Albany fire engine and a command vehicle descended Tuesday upon the intersection of Third Avenue and Washington Street in response to an incident involving a person who had accidentally set himself on fire.
By the time they all arrived, Albany Fire Chief John Bradner had everything under control.
Bradner and his wife, Leslie, were driving downtown for lunch when he saw a fire break out in James Ervin's shirt pocket.
"I just said, 'That man's on fire!'" said Bradner. "So I jumped out and gave assistance."
Reacting quickly, Bradner removed Ervin's shirt and stomped out the flames while Leslie called 911. Because he was wearing so many layers, Ervin was not injured.
