The Chetco Bar Fire has ripped through 98,000 acres, five homes and displaced hundreds of residents.
"The challenges are great. We're dealing with a very fast moving fire," said Tommy Schroeder, the State Fire Marshal public information officer.
At this point with so much smoke and no visibility - air tankers aren't able to help.
But why the U.S. Forest Service stopped using them when the fire was in its early stages isn't exactly known.
"Retardant was dropped on it during that initial attack and it was not effective. I wasn't here at the time so I'm not sure what the result was," said Bruce Palmer, a U.S. Forest Service representative for the fire.
