A 14-year-old girl was killed Saturday afternoon after being pinned under a log in the heavy receding tide on a Bandon beach.
The Eugene girl was playing on the log at the South Jetty Park beach when the log rolled on top of her, the Oregon State Police said. People nearby were able to free the girl after several attempts, but she had already sustained severe injuries.
A Bandon police officer attempted CPR, and paramedics attempted to administer aid, but the girl was pronounced dead at South Coos Hospital.
Large, unexpected "sneaker waves" had previously injured at least two children since 2000 by rolling large logs over top of them. Similar rogue waves have killed at least 17 in that period who were swept out to sea. They're most common from late fall to early spring along the Oregon Coast, when the Pacific Ocean is especially rough.
