The irony isn't lost on Chrystal Akin-Bruce.
Both she and her brother are volunteer firefighters, and they nearly lost their mom and dad in a house fire.
The fire was reported at 5:30 a.m. off Highway 35 between Parkdale and Odell.
"It’s very surreal, my brother and I keep looking at each other and say 'can we wake up now?'" she tells KATU News.
Chrystal said her parents were trapped in their bedroom on the second floor of the home. Flames engulfed the house and the couple couldn't get out.
She said her father, a former firefighter with the Odell Fire District, somehow got to the roof.
"So my dad got to the edge of the roof, sat down and jumped off and then grabbed a fire hose to try to cool the fire below them, so my mom could get down," said Akin-Bruce.
Then he urged his wife to jump.
