The grass along Bryson Sears Road may look green, but don't be fooled:
It wil burn.
"This is the type of fuel model," explains South Lane Fire Chief John Wooten, "that we see build into the big conflagration fires."
Wooten and his fellow firefighters were called out to the area Monday.
"The initial reports said it was about an acre," he recalled, "and it had doubled in size by the time they hung up the phone."
The brush fire swept through tall grass, threatening homes.
With the help of fire crews from Goshen and Pleasant Hill on the ground and a helicopter in the air, firefighters avoided a disaster.
"This time of year we're pre-positioned for wildland fire," Wooten said. "We ramp up for those in the spring." Wooten said tall grass is fueling the trouble.
