A drone flew over a helicopter dumping water on the Miles Fires in Oregon on Thursday.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office made a public appeal Friday for help identifying the pilot responsible.
The incident took place at Burnt Peak.
"An unknown suspect flew a drone over a helicopter which was dumping water on the fire," according to the sheriff's office. "This incident posed a significant safety risk to the helicopter and ground crews, and effectively caused a stoppage to air operations in the area."
The Temporary Flight Restriction in place over the Miles Fire and other wildfires prohibits drones.
"Even a tiny drone can cause a serious or fatal accident if it collides with firefighting aircraft," according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho. "In most situations, if drones are spotted near a wildfire, firefighting aircraft must land due to safety concerns."
