At 9:10 a.m. Monday, Coos Bay Fire Department responded to 527 10th Ave in the Eastside District on a report of a smoke coming from the roof of a house. First arriving units found a two-story home with light smoke showing from the eaves and roof. The fire was under control at 9:28 a.m., officials said. Suppression personnel found an active fire within the exterior eave and attic of the home. The fire originated in the eave then spread to the attic, but was confined to that area, firefighters said. Following an investigation into the cause, officials say the occupant had a fire in a wood stove that had been illegally installed and vented out of a window. The chimney pipe was too close to combustible materials and allowed all the heat to escape directly onto the roof eave.
