A Madison Street home caught fire Tuesday from what Portland firefighters determined to be caused by improperly extinguished cigarettes.
One adult and one child were inside the home at the time of the fire, which started around 4 p.m., but were safely evacuated and there were no injuries.
The fire started on the house's deck and spread into the attic. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames in a matter of minutes, Sgt. Louisa Jones said.
Seven engines and four ladder trucks responded to the house, located on the 2300 block of Madison Street, near Vista Avenue. A section of the road was closed off while firefighters responded to the fire and has since reopened.
