A Chiloquin-area man has been arrested for allegedly lighting his own classic car on fire Sunday and damaging a building belonging to his brother.
Robert Merle Cheek, 67, was investigated after he called in a structure fire Sunday morning on the 34900 block of South Chiloquin Road.
A 1970 Ford Mustang belonging to Cheek had been set on fire after he allegedly stuffed a rag in the gas tank. The fire caused minor damage to the vehicle and to a Quonset hut housing the car and other antique vehicles.
Cheek was interviewed the next day and allegedly admitted to starting the fire because he was mad at his brother, who owned the Quonset hut. A police report said mental health issues contributed to the incident.
Cheek appeared in court Tuesday charged with second-degree arson, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Attorney Marcus Costello was appointed to represent Cheek and his next scheduled court date is May 22 before Judge Dan Bunch.
