On Thursday, Sept. 20 at 4:35 am, Columbia River Fire & Rescue Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire in the 300 block of N. Vernonia St. in St. Helens. A neighbor saw the fire and knocked on the door to alert the occupants. The three people and their dog escaped the fire unharmed. On arrival, crews found smoke and flames coming from the home with most of the fire coming from the garage area. It took firefighters about 25 minutes to control the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Scappoose Firefighters also responded and assisted with the fire. Columbia River PUD responded to the incident and disconnected the power to the building. St. Helens Police also responded, assisted the occupants of the structure, and helped with traffic control while fire equipment blocked North Vernonia Road.
