New trophies which will pay tribute to area firefighters and the heritage of a Pine Grove fire company were unveiled Monday as preparations continue for the 64th annual Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Convention.
“Our station used to be a former brickyard,” said David Sattizahn, chief of Pine Grove Hose Hook & Ladder Fire Company No. 1 and president of the Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Association.
HH&L, which hosted the 2012 county event, is also hosting this year’s convention that runs Aug. 19 to 25. Bricks from the former Pine Grove Brick Co. will be used as the centerpieces for the 90 convention trophies up for grabs.
The trophy project has been a collaborative effort. Herbert Hoy, a former HH&L assistant chief, and his son, Chris Hoy, had the original bricks and donated them for the cause.
