Firefighters in central Berks County have new gear to help them fight fires. The Fleetwood Volunteer Fire Company purchased dozens of sets of turnout gear using grant money. The fire company partnered with the Virginville Fire Company to apply for a FEMA "Assistance to Firefighters Grant." The two departments received $184,000 to replace gear that is wearing out. Officials say the grant allows them to spend their money on other resources. "So now, for a few years, we can save that money or spend that money that we would normally spend on gear for other things (like) new training, new equipment," Fleetwood Volunteer Fire Company Chief John Manmiller said. The grant money also allowed the departments to purchase helmets, gloves, boots and traffic safety vests.
